The Nerve. The Gall. - 2/365

Tuesday is the day I go to singing class at Culver City Adult School. I’ve been in and out of the class for a few (read: MANY) years now. I call it singing class, but really it’s a musical performance class. Each week students get up and perform solo pieces that they’ve prepared, as assigned by our inimitable teacher, Cathy Gabrielle Wallace. I also study with Cathy privately.

Until now, I’ve kept my camera out of the classroom, if only to keep singing a purely creative endeavor and not have it cross over into “work.” But I think I’ve been at it long enough that I can allow the lines to blur just a bit.

The song I performed tonight is from the Broadway musical “Little Women”, entitled Astonishing. It’s a beautiful song about a young woman’s desire, albeit laced with trepidation, to leave her happy little home and experience something new and exciting…to find out if she can really be astonishing.

I’ve come to love this song, but perhaps the most astonishing thing about it is how many words it has! It’s tiring to sing. Seriously. The opening of the song on the broadway cast soundtrack is performed at a breakneck pace. I’ll be working up to that…

Until tomorrow.
